Welcome
About Me

My name is Emma Nightingale. I am a BACP-registered Person-Centred counsellor with extensive experience in supportive roles within education, mental health provisions, and victim support services. Although my vocational experience informs my work, I believe that my strength as a counsellor lies in my ability to meaningfully connect with my clients. I genuinely care about every client I see.
My approach is grounded in the belief that each person inherently possesses the ability to grow and heal themselves and that they are the best experts on their own lives. However, I also acknowledge that there are moments when being our own expert can feel overwhelming. My clients and I work in collaboration. I offer empathy, acceptance, and a non-judgmental space. I won't dictate the topics you talk to me about, but I may gently encourage you to delve into the core of your issues.
I have worked with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, bereavement, bullying, child-related issues, depression, emotional abuse, identity issues, infertility, coercion, control, domestic abuse, LGBTQ+ issues, loss, menopause, men's issues, past childhood trauma, physical health issues, personal growth, post-traumatic stress, pregnancy-related issues, relationship issues, self-esteem, sexual abuse, sexual identity, stress, trauma, women's issues, and work-related issues.
About Where I Work

I offer face-to-face counselling sessions in a private garden room in Desborough, NN14.

The garden room is located in my family garden but is entirely separate from my family home, accessible through an external side gate and an independent entry system. Although members of my family may be home during your counselling sessions, they will not have access to the garden.

The counselling room is a private, confidential space with blinds for privacy, and toilet facilities are available for the exclusive use of clients.

Upon scheduling an appointment, I will provide you with my full address. Free, unrestricted parking is available on the public road outside. The space is heated and air-cooled for your comfort.

I also offer online sessions via Zoom, a video conferencing platform that allows users to connect remotely through audio, video, and chat. Zoom works across various devices, including computers, smartphones, and tablets, enabling me to communicate with you if you prefer to meet remotely.

For online counselling, you will need to agree to be in a private, confidential space where no one else can hear or observe us. You will also need to agree that no recording will take place. I will agree to conduct all online sessions from the private counselling room described above.
About Counselling

Counselling offers a safe space to explore personal issues, emotional challenges, and mental health concerns that have been troubling individuals for either short or long periods of time. No issue is too small. Those who decide to enter counselling do not have anything wrong with them. Rather, they seek a deeper understanding of themselves and aim to improve their mental well-being. Counselling is designed to help individuals trust themselves and make decisions based on their inner feelings and experiences. It is not always an easy process, and a person’s counselling journey is unlikely to be free from emotional challenges. However, the rewards of uncovering one's true self, exploring one's full potential, and navigating life's obstacles with the support of a counsellor can be profound.

So, what can you expect from counselling with me? Initially, we would arrange a free, no-obligation one-hour assessment appointment to get acquainted. You can determine if I am someone you feel comfortable working with, while I can learn more about what you hope to gain from counselling. I will ask several questions about your past and present circumstances to ensure that the support I provide is suitable for you. If we decide to work together, we will schedule your first counselling session, where you will lead the discussion on any topics of your choice. We will commit to a set number of sessions and then review our progress together, focusing on the issues most significant to you.

Counselling may be brief or extend over time. There is no set limit to the number of sessions I offer, and you are free to end our sessions whenever you choose. However, if you decide to work with me, I ask that you commit to a one-hour session, either weekly or bi-weekly, at a consistent time. Your scheduled appointment will be reserved exclusively for you.

About Confidentiality
Confidentiality is the practice of safeguarding information and ensuring it remains undisclosed. It creates a secure space for you to share your deepest thoughts and concerns, nurturing a respectful and trusting relationship with your counsellor. Nightingale Counselling provides a confidential environment where you can safely explore any issues or feelings you wish to bring to counselling. I am dedicated to accepting you as you are, ensuring you feel safe discussing difficult emotions and challenges, with the assurance that our conversations will remain private.

However, there are exceptions to confidentiality:
-
If you express intent to seriously harm yourself or others.
-
If you share something that leads me to believe a child or vulnerable adult is being harmed or is at serious risk of harm.
-
If you disclose that you have committed a serious crime or intend to commit one.
-
If I am legally ordered by a court to disclose information about you.
-
If you reveal intent to commit an act of terrorism, are involved in drug dealing, or are laundering money.

In these situations, confidentiality will be breached, and the necessary information will be shared with the appropriate professionals. Whenever possible, I will inform you of the need to breach confidentiality and keep you informed of any subsequent plans of action. Breaches of confidentiality are extremely rare.

Nightingale Counselling adheres to the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy, 2018 (copy available on request).
